Straight to the incredible

slugrace in Lejre on October 16th!

The exhibition is about the Spanish slug Arion lusitanicus that has become common in the gardens of central and northern Europe. Many gardeners consider it to be the worst pest of all.

In Lejre, the "travelling-slug-racing-track" is presented. This is a wooden box measuring approx. 30x30x40 cm, stained dark brown, with brass edges and signs, giving it a somewhat sterling impression. A Spanish and a Danish slug are kept in seperate compartments inside the box. The slugs can crawl through holes in the wall onto the actual racing track - two transparent acrylic tubes measuring one metre in length. A flat dish filled with beer is placed at the end of the tubes in order to attract the animals. On the lid of the box, there are stamps and a label with the postal address of the house in Selfoss.

In the garden in Selfoss, there will be arranged a "high-security-flowerbed". A single cabbage or the like is hereby protected from slugs by use of beer-traps, as well as electric and ordinary slug-fences. The flowerbed is partially raised, with two or three height levels. Possibly, the cabbage is planted in a tiny greenhouse on top of the bed. Flyers are handed out, informing about the forthcoming slug-invasion and its fatal consequences for Iceland. Garden owners are asked to protect their gardens preventively.

In the kitchen in Axstedt (close to Bremen) visitors get to taste a snail-dinner (not a slug-dinner, though). They are invited to bet on the racing snails.

The laptop computer will be connected to the internet. A website will report about the state of the race and provide information about the racing track and the participating slugs, etc.
